Strengthening Aviation Cybersecurity: A Productive Three-Day Workshop Between FHNW and Airbus

22. Mai 2025

The aviation industry faces an evolving landscape of challenges, from extreme weather conditions to the integration of new fuel and energy systems including hydrogen technology. As part of the EU Horizon Project Albatros, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) recently hosted a productive three-day workshop focused on aviation cybersecurity with industry partner Airbus.

About the Albatros Project

The Albatros project (Advanced systems and solutions for better practices against hazards in the aviation system) is a Horizon Europe-funded initiative with an overarching ambition to maintain high levels of safety and resilience in aviation. The project specifically addresses the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and the transformative changes brought about by the evolution of aviation systems, particularly new fuel and energy systems including hydrogen technology that will be integrated into both future aircraft and airport infrastructures.

Workshop Focus: Aviation Cybersecurity

During the three-day workshop, members from FHNW and Airbus collaborated on developing innovative approaches and techniques to enhance aircraft security against cyber threats. The workshop brought together Prof. Dr. Christopher Scherb, Hermann Grieder, and Alex Trapp from FHNW with Mischa Jahn from Airbus, creating a valuable exchange of knowledge and perspectives between academic research and industry practice.

Outcomes and Insights

The three-day intensive proved both insightful and productive, with participants working on practical solutions to address the growing cybersecurity challenges facing modern aviation systems. As aircraft become increasingly connected and reliant on digital systems the importance of robust cybersecurity measures cannot be overstated. The workshop illustrated the collaborative approach that makes the Albatros project successful – bringing together academic research capabilities with industry expertise to address real-world challenges in aviation safety and security.

Looking Forward

This workshop represents an important step in the ongoing Albatros project, demonstrating how academic-industry partnerships can drive innovation in aviation safety. The insights and approaches developed during these three days will contribute to the project’s broader mission of enhancing aviation system resilience.
